He previously practiced as an orthopaedic surgeon and served as a part-time clinical instructor at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for more than 20 years. He also served as a Major in the United States Army Medical Reserve from 1988 to 1996, including active duty during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
